Throughout much of my early adulthood, I did not have a budget. I simply relied upon the ever-changing balance of my bank account to tell me if I could "afford" something. Relying on my bank balance was better than nothing, but it didn't give me a concrete way to prioritize my spending and saving goals. Accumulated savings quickly vanished without a budget. That changed once I started to budget using YNAB, and I was quickly able to move my finances forward.

I'm also no stranger to life's difficult and unexpected financial circumstances. Upon a surprising realization of the total debt we'd be carrying into marriage, my wife and I decided to "tie the knot" anyway, and we paid off over $80,000 shortly after our wedding. We've also weathered an accident totaling one of our vehicles, the loss of my wife's income during the pandemic, and the purchase of our first home at a higher interest rate than we desired.
