About Tara
Tara James is the founder of MacGuffin House, a coaching and strategic communications practice that helps accomplished professionals rewrite their next chapter — on their own terms.
The work moves in two directions at once: inward, to get clear on what you actually want; and outward, to build the positioning and communications strategy to make it real (think LinkedIn profiles, executive bios, keynote speeches, and more). Life first. Career in service of it.
Her background is anything but conventional. A former private investigator and first-generation college graduate, Tara went on to earn a master’s degree in human development and psychology from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. She then spent over twenty years in child and youth policy, advocating for families and communities facing the greatest barriers to success. That work made her an expert in something most coaches never develop: a deep understanding of the systems we live within, the ways those systems shape what people believe is possible for them, and what it actually takes to rewrite that story.
Her coaching is grounded in human development and psychology, and in the skills she has spent a career developing — helping people unpack the narratives holding them back, identify their inherent strengths, and reclaim what’s always been theirs.
MacGuffin House clients are recovering goal-getters: high achievers who are done chasing external definitions of success. Tara helps them figure out what they’re actually chasing — and whether it’s worth the chase.
