How to choose a holistic life coach
"Holistic" means different things to different coaches. For some it's an approach: looking at your whole life instead of one goal. For others it includes specific practices like meditation, breathwork, or energy work. Your first job is to find out which kind you're talking to.
Ask what holistic means in their practice. There's no wrong answer, but there is a wrong fit. If you want practical whole-life coaching and they lead with energy healing, or the reverse, keep looking.
Ask how they connect the dots. The value of holistic coaching is seeing how your sleep affects your work, how your work affects your relationships, and so on. A good coach can give you a concrete example of finding a root cause a client hadn't seen.
Check their training. Holistic coaches come from varied backgrounds: coaching certifications, yoga and mindfulness training, nutrition, bodywork. Ask what they're trained in and what they refer out. Referring out is a good sign, not a bad one.
Expect structure, not just vibes. Whole-life coaching still needs goals, sessions with a shape, and a way to tell whether things are improving. Ask how they track progress across the areas you're working on.
Ask for a short intro call before you commit. Describe what feels off, even if it's vague. A good holistic coach is comfortable starting with "everything feels connected and none of it is working" and will tell you where they'd begin.
Questions to ask before you hire
Take these into your intro call. The answers will show you what kind of holistic coach you're talking to.
- What does "holistic" mean in how you work?
- What are you trained in, and what do you refer out?
- What does a typical session with you look like?
- How do you decide which area of life to work on first?
- How do you track progress across different areas?
- How long do clients usually work with you?
There are no right answers here. You're listening for a coach whose version of holistic matches what you're actually looking for.
What to say when you reach out
A first message can be as unfinished as your situation feels. Borrow one of these:
Hi [name], several areas of my life feel stuck at once and I suspect they're connected. I'm looking for coaching that works on the whole picture. What does "holistic" mean in your practice, and how would you start?
Hi [name], I've tried tackling [goal] on its own and it never sticks, so I want to look at what's underneath it. Could you tell me how you'd structure the first month of working together?
Swap in your own situation and send it to two or three coaches. Comparing their answers is the fastest way to find your fit.
What holistic life coaching is (and isn't)
A holistic life coach helps you improve your life as a connected whole. Coaching is not medicine or therapy, whatever practices it draws on. For a health condition, see a doctor; for anxiety, depression, or trauma, a licensed mental health professional is the right first stop. Good holistic coaches are clear about these lines and work alongside professional care, not instead of it.
One more honest note: working on everything at once is a way to change nothing. A good holistic coach sees the whole picture but still starts somewhere specific.
How this list works
You're browsing CoachCompare's holistic life coach directory. Coaches create their own profiles and choose their own specialties, and everyone on this page lists holistic life coaching as one of theirs. Profiles are written by the coaches themselves. The list shows the newest profiles first unless you change the sort, and coaches don't pay for placement in these results.
